A + + holiday golfers Agenda: – Northern Portugal Tour

Introduction: —

Last year was our first trip to Porto in the north of Portugal, through a one week cruise on the Douro River, brilliantly organized by PortGolf. At the end of this week, Peter Everts, who heads PortGolf suggested I should go back to the feast of St. Joao and maybe play golf. This seemed a good idea if we turn the UK, hosted a dinner for two couples, one (Gerry and Catriona) had played golf, near Porto and Jim and Margery. We discussed the idea and agreed that eight would be a good figure. Shortly after we had dinner with another couple, John and Marion, who has offered to join us. None of us had never holidayed together before it would be a test of friendship. Due to other commitments Gerry and Catriona John and Marion would be a one-week stay, and Jim and Margery remained for twelve days.

The following is a record of this trip: —

Thursday, June 21st —

We decided to take the first flight from Gatwick to Porto 6:30 while the others fled 1:30 pm. We were greeted at the airport to Porto 9 a.m. by Peter Evens who have fallen to four-star Hotel Fenix, an ideal position to Around the area of Boa Vista. The weather was clear with a light rain around noon. Having unpacked in our large room on the 9th floor with a splendid view of a cemetery really beautiful city and we were in our first venture away from the center of the city and explore the region. We had a meal of pasta and wine at the restaurant symbiosis (30 €), overlooking the river and watched Port wine boats carrying people come and go. I went back uphill to the hotel by calling the local supermarket gin and whiskey nightcap. The rest of the troops arrived at 6:15 pm a little late because delays. After checking in we boarded the elevator trip to the 9th floor. Now, this elevator has an opinion that says is for 10 people – unfortunately, that means 10 Portuguese people who are a little smaller in size from 8 to lift the British decided to lower floors Prior to -5 come to an end with a loud noise. Not exactly the start we wanted, but we managed to extract ourselves and walk downstairs proceeded to ride the elevator and the Lift 2nd period – the time for a drink! Peter met us at the bar at 8 pm we were taken in two vehicles with Maria Moita, a Porto local restaurant for dinner. Peter is left to interpret as not much English is spoken and take pictures of the night. Fun food, with interesting menu and wine jars. 11.30 per bed a little exhausted.

Friday, June 22nd —

Held at 8.15, dry, but gray with a blue tint. , Breakfast and a quick walk out the local shops. Peter and Paul, met at 12:30 for our first game of golf at Wake.

The course takes about an hour in downtown Port-Atlantic. The drive was pleasant and informative, and the entrance guarded by two automatic doors. A drink and a sandwich began Roasting competition was a four ball better ball with the husbands of the women of the association. In general the links courses, the wind of hell and was a contributing factor to the round takes 4 hours. Gerry and Catriona are the winners and large quantities of gin and tonic and beer was consumed. A shower and change before turning in Casa do Frango in a nearby town – the problem was our driver left us in the wrong place, celebrating the trial, but the wine never stops flowing before the arrival of chicken and potatoes – proved to be a night of fun and test the ability of some people drinking. On our return to the hotel, John and Marion joined us in our lounge for a drink and left at 1:30.

Saturday, June 23rd: —

At 8:30 in the morning and a glorious summer day. Everyone at the center of the city to visit, but for us was the price of store for meeting with the band at Cafe Majestic – the 'in situ' to see – coffee and cognac was the agenda. Stop for lunch at Foz Praia da Luz, a restaurant great on the beach where he had last years of the show – good food and wine with a variety of local dishes at ridiculously low € 30 per couple. Back at 4pm at the hotel to relax before the evening activities. In Midnight Porto celebrated the feast of St. João.

Peter and cabin we collected at 9.10pm and we take Taylor Port Wine Lodge, where the atmosphere is electric – a couple hundred people sitting round tables for a full menu of Kale and Potato Soup, bread, sardines, roast goat and vegetables followed by almond cake and ice cream. Superior wines are served and we tried a couple of bottles of port 20 years old. The lodge is located in Gaia on the south side of the river Douro and 12:05 a.m. adjourning to the terrace to watch the fireworks in Porto, which was out of this world – we are all surprised the magnificence of the scene. John & Marion should go by taxi because it struck the achilles heel of John, while the rest of us have to walk because they are not vehicles allowed in the other area for medical reasons. Crowding is worse than a final at Wembley, but everyone is in great humor like this and it seems that all the inhabitants of Porto, which hit in the head with a plastic hammer or a long garlic (plant age of two traditions) – which eventually fell on the deck that had been closed at some point because of too many people doing it to crumble. Parties, dancing and singing all the way back to the hotel and so to bed at 3 am after to survive a more enjoyable adventure.

Sunday, June 24th: —

Up for breakfast, lots of orange and black coffee seemed the agenda. Later collected to go to Amarante Golf Course for another hour. It seems that we had the course to ourselves. Said, rolling, is indeed difficult to find your way around, sometimes a few accompanied by Bangs spectacular holes all afternoon, as S. Joao continued to be celebrated. Men against women this time the men had no chance. Showered and changed out at a restaurant in Amarante – problem was our driver seemed to have forgotten until it was informed by Peter mobile phone, then ran to 120 km / h to return to the track. No English at all in the restaurant that life a little difficult. Food very nice, but seemed to be in a calmer mood – at our age, late nights can interfere with some people.

Monday, June 25th: —

Today, we are going to Puerto Cricket & Lawn Tennis Club, for your bag pack with six of us on an adventure – a day trip on a boat on the Douro. Gerry & Catriona have made this trip before so they float to Estela for golf. Splendid weather and travel is very good with breakfast and lunch and the river is so peaceful. We become friends with Lourdes is the tour guide. Later, she was surprised to find us drinking champagne – he asked that we celebrate, we call it a birthday, asked whose birthday is and we tell him we do not know, but we are sure that it is anniversary somebody somewhere. We arrived at 4.15pm Regua and taken by coach for a few 200 meters from the station where we must continue our train back to Porto adventure travel approximately 2 hours. Peter comes to meet us at the station and leads to our new location in the OC LTC and a small oasis in the midst of Porto. Very colonial style and everyone is very friendly. Shower and change clothes and meet beverages in the lobby before walking a few hundred yards up the road to Capa Negra 2 in a local restaurant, where they are cared by Olivetti, who speaks good English and advises on local dishes. Many wine and an afternoon of fun at all for the princely sum of € 30 per couple. John and Marion insist on having a drink at our in-room – Another Late Night.

Tuesday, June 26: —

Breakfast at 9am, and then toured the grounds of the club and its control tracks tennis, cricket pitch (believed to bat first) and the pool. We were ready to play golf, and soon we started Ponte de Lima on a sunny day. Once again about an hour's drive from the golf course, but very picturesque mountain and something – a need buggies. Drinks and a snack at first, but you should never push these places was a good work-around took more than five hours, not used, but we're on vacation what the hell. A quick shower and drink before going Attend Restaurant. A limited menu and very costly for the region, but appreciated. We returned to the clubhouse and before 12:30 – a long day.

Wednesday 27 June: —

Up at 8:15 shower and a good breakfast. Today is a day of relaxation in which we all do our own thing. A day in the pool some, buying some of these ladies and the bridge for others. We all gathered at the bar at 8 pm tonight, eat in fabulous restaurants and club awards. It has been estimated each has received a class award winning Jim and Margery and Peter Evens "PortGolf Award for best score on Race 1 index hole in any way we played. Food, wine, service and atmosphere can be improved a great end to those departing the next day. A little late to bed!

Thursday, June 28th: —

Lack goodbye to Gerry and Catriona, but has managed to Marion and John, who was to catch a later flight. Today is Peter and Jim and Margery us for a trip to Douro Valley Tour. 9.45pm start again in glorious sunshine. Our first stop is the basement of the Quinta de Aveleda.

A tour of cheese tasting. We walked around the grounds have beautiful gardens, including the resident peacocks. At the store, a big mouth American who was buying a pack of wine, boasting about the woman at the reception which again had a thousand bottles of wine – to which she responded, "And now you're a thousand and six, sir." – Priceless!

Our next stop was at Amaranth to see the famous bridge and a quick tour of the city, very nice. Through hills covered with vineyards Regua and stopped for lunch at the Pousada. Sitting outside under the glorious sunshine and wonderful views of the valley. We went to the Quinta do Panascal – Winery Fonseca / Harbor Lodge, conducted a tour of the terraces of grapes with an audio tape and headphones giving a history and workings of the company. Back at the lodge over to the tasting, a return by miles and Vila Real miles of hills covered with vineyards, from top to bottom. Back at the club for a shower and change before putting Peter restaurant in Porto. We were intrigued to Boot see Jim as he had ordered "the crust of the fish soup. (the cheese is on top!)

Friday, June 29th: —

Breakfast 9am – Today, we came in the wake of golf, but what a difference, loads of sun and no wind. Girls compared to boys (and yes, of course, the girls won, but only to 18th) – back to the club for a rest and a shower.

A special night as we met Peter's wife, Anabella, for the first time and going to Praia da Luz, for dinner. A good meal with lively conversation and a beautiful sunset, we have several pictures if anyone wants one copy. Home to bed for another day.

Saturday, June 30th: —

Despite Sunset last night, we woke up with heaven gray and much cooler temperatures. The girls, (I use the term loosely), shopping in Vila Nova de Gaia English Court. "CHAPS do our own thing as reading and watching the members that the barbecue for breakfast – Jim is sardines. Lorna and Margery comes back to 2.15pm and after the hearing of their adventures and tea buns – as civilized.

Pierre brings us together at 6.45pm as we are having drinks at his house in Senhora da Hora. This encounter with Anabela Jacquay again and later also with one of his twin daughters to keep us on the piano. Then go to a fish restaurant, O Manel in Matosinhos – English spoken and not struggle with the Menu not the best place to eat in our opinion, also very expensive. An early night for all.

Sunday 1 July: —

A day off – the time a little gray and not very optimistic. Margery and Jim decides to visit the city by bus, while the open top, we decided to walk to the Crystal Palace large park that houses a circular building for concerts, there are beautiful views of the river and through the city. We continue our walk through S. Bento subway station where you can try buying a ticket machine to two per day – that fail miserably despite using a couple of locals, but were rescued by a post of security guard who helped us buy the correct entries. The Metro is very modern and is a cross between a tram, a trolley bus and a subway train – very clean and quiet. The first trip takes us in the top of the Ponte do Luis and out terminal English Court. "We're going down, but off at Jardim do Morro, where we were informed there are some good photos through the current. We then decided to walk over the bridge instead of climbing. In retrospect, this was not a good idea because we believe that the bridge is similar in construction and the bridge in Sydney Harbor in Australia – who could not walk through even if they do chained to the fence to what we do here? Thus, English is, we put our heads and keep walking until it relieves a bit, we came across – Phew! I should add that Metro trains that pass by a few cm that is added to the excitement. We have some nice pictures of trains crossing the bridge and enter the tunnel below us. Shaking legs, we went hundreds of steps and the winding streets into the river where he had a bottle of wine and food and watch the world go by. We went into the station and went to the Estádio do Dragão recently completed a stage before returning to our nearby station house, the Casa da Musica ". The weather had improved in that time and he returned to sun club.

We met Jim and Margery to the pool and the sharing of stories and adventures, then a brief nap before getting ready to take to our last night in the restaurants "Caffeine. An elegant hotel and good food, but again would not be in our top five. Peter have collected and sent home safe at the club.

Monday, July 2nd: —

A wonderful attribute of the club is that customers are not forced to leave the room until noon. We took advantage of this by having time to pack so relaxed and having stored the bags that were collected by Peter to take us to lunch at "Ar Rio ", a modern restaurant in Riverside Cais da Gaia. We sat inside by an open wall overlooking the River Douro, in the glorious sunshine. Peter we have collected and brought Puerto Crofts Wine Lodge for a tour and tasting – a beautiful way to end a holiday at Porto.

We got the club luggage, said goodbye to us personnel and Peter left us in time to the airport for the flight was delayed for fifty minutes.

Overall a great vacation, well organized by Evens PortGolf as Pierre, whose care and attention of their customers is unmatched.

Certainly, we will return once again to the most interesting cities.
